Woody ribs, and why they are worth breeding for

Now these are the type of genetics you are trying to achieve. If you look at this stem morphology, you can see that this particular specimen has thick woody ribs. A very worthwhile trait.
This accomplishes two very important things, increasing the rate at which branch/bud production is possible, but also better physically supporting a yield on a high producing plant. This can help to prevent sagging and breaking branches.
